Afghanistan issues 134 operating licenses to domestic, foreign NGOs

KABUL, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of Economy granted 134 operating licenses to domestic and foreign organizations during the past year, the ministry's spokesperson Abdul Rahman Habib said.

"About 134 operating licenses were distributed to domestic and foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Afghanistan, of which 129 are domestic, and the rest are foreign, all operating in different sectors including security, health, education, agriculture, and disaster management," Tolonews quoted Habib on Saturday as saying.

According to the ministry's report, 2,608 NGOs, including 280 foreign organizations, have been active in Afghanistan.

Despite years of conflict, Afghanistan's social institutions have been instrumental in improving education, healthcare, and the environment, playing a vital role in managing the humanitarian crisis over the past few years.
