KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- The counter-narcotics police have discovered a huge quantity of illicit drugs and arrested eight drug traffickers in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, provincial police spokesman Mullah Asadullah Jamshid said Friday.

The contraband, which includes 2,123 kg hashish, 72 kg opium poppy, 4 kg crystal, and more than 730 kg raw material used in manufacturing heroin was discovered during a series of recent operations in parts of the province, the official said.

Police also destroyed eight acres of hashish farm recently, the official said, adding that no one would be allowed to produce or smuggle illegal drugs in the province.

The Afghan caretaker government, which has banned poppy cultivation, processing of drugs, and drug trafficking, has vowed to fight the menace until the once-poppy growing country becomes a drug-free nation.
